In Florida domestic violence homicide is up 15.6%. Domestic violence manslaughter is up 71.4%. You can look in other states and get similar numbers, so the question is what are we going to do about it? Do we continue to say “that does not effect me” until we find out its been occurring right next door and in our own families? Domestic violence is not prejudice it has found its way in every income level and all types of communities. This problem needs to be attacked head on by more than one organization, agency, group, or individual. This is a problem that effects us as a community and it needs to be addressed and attacked by a community.

Them-Us.com in conjunction with Lanier Interactive are presenting the Men Against Domestic Violence Conference a full day event that not only talks about the effects of domestic violence and how to get help but how the abuser can take control and change their lives. The conference will consist of programs and organizations that can provide help to individuals as well as couples. Some of our current speakers include but are limited to, The Spring of Tampa Bay, Dr. David Thomas, Stann W. Givens of the Givens Divorce Law Group, Tampa PD and more. We will use practical examples as teaching tools along with lectures and personal accounts. This conference is about getting help, healing and moving forward. Our goal is to provide a positive impact of change to individuals and families as we try to stop the cycle of domestic violence and we would like your support. ABC Action news Positively Tampa Bay segment will conduct a pre-conference interview September 15th to highlight the conference and our mission. The conference focuses on two central areas;

1. Addressing the abuser getting them to understand there is a problem and how to recognize and change how they approach conflict. Giving them affective tools and resources to manage anger. Getting them to understand what you’ve learned is not the only solution. Dealing with contributing mental and phycological issues that help facilitate abuse. How to heal and move forward with a positive life.

2. With the victim we want to start off with recognizing the problems early and making sure they are addressed. How the law can help you (each state different). Working with someone that wants to get help and is managing anger. How to leave an abusive situation. Where to get help and what resources are available. Dealing with the phycological and emotional damage caused by abuse. Dealing with the guilt of leaving. How to heal and move forward with a positive life.

Providing people with the tools and resources to get help and move forward with a better life is something we really take seriously. This message must go out and something must be done to stop this cycle of violence.
